This rare but serious illness is caused by bacteria that can produce toxins in a baby’s intestines. The bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, can be found in soil and dust, and occasionally, in honey. While honey is safe for older children and adults because their digestive systems are more developed, infants are particularly vulnerable to this bacteria.


Symptoms of infant botulism include constipation, poor feeding, lethargy, and a weak cry. If you suspect your child has been exposed, seek medical attention immediately.


Why You Shouldn’t Give Honey to a Child Below 1 Year


The digestive systems of infants under one year old are not mature enough to handle certain bacteria, including those that can be found in honey. The spores of Clostridium botulinum can survive in the low-acid environment of an infant’s stomach and produce toxins, leading to potentially severe consequences. This is why it is strongly recommended to avoid giving honey to babies younger than 12 months.
